What Official Guidance Confirms

MetaMask says its support team will not send unsolicited support DMs through community platforms and will never ask for a Secret Recovery Phrase. Its spoofing guidance describes accounts that imitate support staff after a user asks for help publicly.

Those statements describe MetaMask's current channels. Other wallets, exchanges, and projects may use different support processes, so check each provider's own official documentation.

Common Pattern

A fake admin watches public questions, then replies or sends a private message. The account may copy a logo, name, profile photo, or professional tone and offer to fix a wallet, claim, transaction, or KYC problem.

Red Flags

The account contacts you first after you post a question.
It asks for a seed phrase, private key, password, OTP, wallet balance, or sensitive screenshot.
It sends a private form, unofficial app, QR code, or wallet-connection link.
It asks you to sign, transfer funds, or pay an unlock or recovery fee.
It creates urgency or moves the conversation away from the provider's documented support channel.

Check The Channel

Stop replying to the private account.
Navigate independently to the provider's official website or help center.
Read the provider's current support-channel policy. Do not rely on a badge, follower count, group title, or link supplied by the person contacting you.
Open a new support request through the documented channel if one is available.
Save non-sensitive evidence and use official reporting tools. Do not post seed phrases, IDs, OTPs, or full account details in a public warning.

Safer Response

Ignore and report the impersonating account, then use only the provider's verified help channel. If sensitive wallet recovery information was shared, treat it as compromised and seek instructions only from official documentation. No private helper can guarantee recovery.
